PREMIERE: Alan Charmer Regains ‘LOST/CONTROL’ in New Video
Artists discuss bringing 2021 single back to life

When Dillon Deaton sent his filmmaker friend Chris Lomartire a Spotify link to R&B singer Alan Charmer’s 2021 single “LOST/CONTROL” last August telling him he needed to check out this Charlotte artist, a fire was lit.
It was the first piece of music Lomartire had heard from Charmer, but it quickly grabbed a hold of him. As a filmmaker, naturally, he began envisioning the ways the two could work together.
“I fell in love with the song and his vibe,” the filmmaker told Queen City Nerve. “Over the next week, I cycled through the rest of his music, blasting each song in my car while trying to picture visuals for each one.”
As it turned out, “LOST/CONTROL” was just too good to pass up, so the two artists began collaborating and eventually created the new visuals for the 2021 single, with Deaton acting as director of photography. The premiere is below, exclusively at Queen City Nerve.
According to Charmer, as much as he would have liked to showcase a new song while working with the two renowned filmmakers, the passion they had for “LOST/CONTROL” convinced him.
“You always want someone you’re working with to be passionate about what you’re working on together and they were both in love with the song,” Charmer said. “I also believe that it will breathe a new life into the song. It will only bring more eyes and ears to the song and I believe it will help the people that have already heard it fall in love with it more.”
Lomartire said he aimed to create an eerie, ambient feeling for the visuals, which were filmed at the VAPA Center in Charlotte. By not including any scenes outdoors or with windows in view, he created a claustrophobic, dreamlike feeling.
“We wanted the premise of the music video to reflect some of the story being played out in the song, but in a not-so-clear-cut way,” he said. “I love when music videos can be framed as questions, not answers. There are layers and layers of things happening, just like the song, but we don’t have to fully grasp everything on a first watch … or even a second or third.”
Alan Charmer, the solo project of Terrence Richard, frontman of the hugely popular Charlotte alt-rock outfit Junior Astronomers, launched in 2021. The singer said he’s working on new Alan Charmer content, with a new single set to release “ASAP.”
“Seeing the final version of the video has lit a fire in me and I’m excited to get back to putting out music more frequently,” he told Queen City Nerve.
