The Black Crowes Leave the Clickbait Behind in Charlotte Tour Stop

There were no chants of “U-S-A.” There was no image of a black crow dressed similar to Uncle Sam. At Truliant Amphitheater on Saturday night, there was only plenty of rock to satisfy the large crowd in attendance.
The Black Crowes, along with Whiskey Myers and Southall, stopped by Charlotte’s largest amp as part of the Southern Hospitality Tour. The band made some national waves for their reaction to a “U-S-A” chant at a Florida tour stop on May 31.
Talking to Ultimate Classic Rock following the incident, which went viral through headlines by Fox News and TMZ, singer Chris Robinson played it cool, saying, “I think the whole thing was, of course, blown out of context so people can get clicks and people can stir up the animosity and philosophies or how you feel about life … It doesn’t matter. In a week, something else will come up that [will stir up] the hornets’ nest.”
He was correct, as Saturday night’s show in Charlotte drew only cheers and sing-alongs.
Robinson still hit all his notes strongly as the band cruised through a 15-song setlist packed with hits. With so many fan favorites, there were sure to be some fans who missed out on their preferred tunes, but the band shone brightly throughout the set, including on the show opener “Sting Me,” followed by “Wiser Time,” “Thorn in My Pride,” and “Jealous Again.”
Five years ago, The Black Crowes performed at this same amphitheater on a reunion tour and I wondered if the brothers would record more music together. Since then, they’ve released two — 2024’s Happiness Bastards and this year’s A Pound of Feathers. It’s surprising that the band only played one song from their latest album and none from Bastards.
Whiskey Myers performed a 75-minute set of their own brand of Southern rock before the Crowes. The Texas outfit has released seven albums and had plenty of fans in attendance. Though they’re often lumped into the country category, their music transcends boundaries, which helps cultivate its broad appeal.
The Black Crowes will continue touring the States until summer arrives, at which time they’ll hop overseas for some European stops.
