As North Carolina artist Reginald Sylvester II’s first solo show comes to a close on Jan. 16, the artist takes part in a conversation centered on how his journey adds to the nuance of Black art and culture. Sylvester’s art is based on materials that refute the digital age — from rough canvas tent pieces that reference his U.S. Marine father to rubber, a ubiquitous industrial material whose fraught history includes slavery and atrocities.
