Classic Black Cinema Series: ‘Island In The Sun’

Set on a fictitious Caribbean island during the waning days of British colonial rule, the plot pits Harry Belafonte as a young charismatic and anti-colonial political leader locking horns with James Mason’s scion of a wealthy white family that’s propping up the corpse of Pax Britannia. Much of the runtime of this 1957 melodrama turns to secrets, scandals and (gasp!) miscegenation, though Mason goes crazy quite nicely.
