International Noir: ‘Nine Queens’

Independent Picture House 4237 Raleigh Street, Charlotte, NC, United States
$8
Two small-time swindlers set out to scam a collector with a rare sheet of stamps called the nine queens. Nothing, however, is what it seems in this tricky Argentinian heist caper. Director Fabien Bielinsky carefully pieces together a puzzle of layered cons and mind fucks, only to grab the puzzle box, throw it against the wall, and start all over. With outstanding characterizations and a coolly efficient style, Bielinsky pulls the rug out from under...

Paramore, Bloc Party, Genesis Owusu

Spectrum Center 333 E Trade St, Charlotte, NC, United States
$100
Precocious teenaged pop punks Paramore became Warped Tour staples after its 2005 debut LP ‘All We Know Is Falling,’. Eighteen years later, the band has abandoned its signature proto-emo mall rock for the jagged, sinister sounds of post punk circa 2000. Vocalist Hayley Williams retains her rangy, ferocious singing though. Speaking of 2000s post punk, tour mates Bloc Party are the real deal, hooky eclectic art punks who inspired Paramore.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library | South Blvd Branch 4429 South Blvd, Charlotte, NC, United States
Free
In recent years, dozens of counties in North Carolina have partnered with federal law enforcement in the criminalization of immigration—what many have dubbed “crimmigration.” Most recently, back in discussion for the third time in four years is NC legislators’ attempt to codify into state law that sheriffs collaborate with ICE, a requirement otherwise voluntary under federal law. Join us for a discussion with Dr. Felicia Arriaga as she discusses her new and timely book Behind

Ashlyn Uribe, Bruce Hazel & John William Harrell, Solis

Petra's 1919 Commonwealth Ave., Charlotte
$7
With powerful vocals, bright production and sensual yet raw lyrics, Ashlyn Uribe stakes a foothold in a genre of irresistible tunes that mirror her listeners’ lofty hopes, deepest dreams and harrowing disappointments. Hazel (Temperance League) and Harrell (Hectorina) cross the crooning cool of Harry Nilsson with the enthusiastic creep factor of a sideshow carnival barker. It’s always great to hear Leonardo and Kellie Solis' band SOLLIS' dark, often winsome brand of dreamlike electronic pop.

‘Empire of the Dark’

Independent Picture House 4237 Raleigh Street, Charlotte, NC, United States
$10
The convoluted plot of actor/director Steve Barkett’s shoestring-budgeted action epic ‘Empire of the Dark’ involves pan-dimensional Satanists and a Ray Harryhausen-styled stop-motion demon. A private detective searching for a killer comes across a satanic cult from another dimension, monsters called up from hell and murderous ninja assassins. Barkett’s scatter-shot yet entertaining effort brings back a lost world of gung ho micro-budgeted 1990s moviemaking.
Free

Rushton,  Merisa Ari, Deven Talford, Brittani Taylor and Daija Peeler. Black Gaze: Through a Woman’s Eyes kicks off with a reception that includes a meet and greet.

The Graes

The Evening Muse 3227 N Davidson St, Charlotte, NC, United States

Ryan Adams & The Cardinals

Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre 000 NC Music Factory Boulevard, Charlotte, NC, United States
$25
After his legendary Raleigh-based garage-rock group Whiskeytown fizzled in the late ’90s, songwriting genius Ryan Adams embraced alt-country stability with The Cardinals. Throughout the 2000s, Adams alternated the Cardinals with a solo career that brought him mainstream fame amid tabloid infamy. Now, Adams and The Cardinals are back, a bit less country this time around.

Jive Talk, Monsoon

Snug Harbor 228 Gordon St., Charlotte, NC, United States
$14.30
With a sound pitched between surf rock and new-wave-besotted early aughts bands like The Killers, Nashville-based theatrical rock band Jive Talk goes big onstage with a scenery chewing live set that draws on the kinetic moves and oversized clothes of ‘Stop Making Sense’–era Talking Heads. Athens, Georgia duo Monsoon is an indie-rock outfit that weaves together unorthodox styles to create music that dips between the conscious and subconscious.

Unwed Sailor, Thousand Dollar Movie, Of Sinking Ships

Petra's 1919 Commonwealth Ave., Charlotte
$12
No vocalists allowed for this evening of primo instrumental rock. On Unwed Sailor’s latest album, ‘Mute The Charm,’ Johnathan Ford shares his love for ’80s pop tunes like “London Fog,” in which digitized guitar sounds recall the opening of U2’s “Where the Streets Have No Name,” while Ford’s fluid bass summons memories of New Order. Unwed Sailor is a primary influence on Charlotte post-rock outfit Thousand Dollar Movie, and Brooklyn’s Of Sinking Ships craft sweeping...

Sam Morril

The Fillmore 820 Hamilton Street, Charlotte, NC, United States
$45
Fast-rising comic Sam Morril can be lethal with his dry and dark punchlines, peppering a stand-up set that encompasses fucked-up fairy tales, biting social commentary and surreal conceptual stuff like comparing condom wearing to volunteer work, wondering if murderers critique each other’s work, and reminiscing on his friendship with a vigilante. New York native Morril offers a night of trenchant stand-up that’s not quite right in the head.

‘Wild at Heart’ & ‘Mulholland Drive’

Independent Picture House 4237 Raleigh Street, Charlotte, NC, United States
$8
To coincide with screenings of Alexandre O. Philippe’s Lynch/Oz, a documentary examining director David Lynch’s obsession with the 1939 Technicolor classic ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ Independent Picture House is showing two classics helmed by Lynch. Aficionados can spot the Oz references in ‘Wild at Heart,’ which boasts a cameo by the Wicked Witch of the West; and ‘Mulholland Drive,’ where Naomi Watts’ character(s) suggest ‘Oz’’s Dorothy Gale experiencing neo-noir meltdown in a Hollywood hellscape.

Caifanes

The Fillmore 820 Hamilton Street, Charlotte, NC, United States
$49.50
Launched in 1987, Mexico City alt-rock band Caifanes adopted the moody grooves, black clothes and pale makeup of Robert Smith’s ensemble from across the pond, earning the stateside moniker “The Mexican Cure.” Early hit “Cuentame Tu Vida” is definitely indebted to Smith and Co., but a closer listen reveals the band’s wide-ranging variety, encompassing reggae, ’80s new wave, jazz torch songs, and traditional Mexican folk tunes.

Classic Black Cinema Series: ‘Island In The Sun’

Harvey B. Gantt Center 551 S Tryon S, Charlotte, NC, United States
$7 – $9
Set on a fictitious Caribbean island during the waning days of British colonial rule, the plot pits Harry Belafonte as a young charismatic and anti-colonial political leader locking horns with James Mason’s scion of a wealthy white family that’s propping up the corpse of Pax Britannia. Much of the runtime of this 1957 melodrama turns to secrets, scandals and (gasp!) miscegenation, though Mason goes crazy quite nicely.

Andy Frasco & The U.N., Cosmic Collective

Visulite Theatre 1615 Elizabeth Ave, Charlotte, NC, United States
$20 – $25
Andy Frasco is a music veteran who’s never lost his youthful enthusiasm for rock. Hope even permeates his mordant 2022 single/video, “Oh What A Life,” on which features Frasco as a disheveled disillusioned circus clown. The Jangly, jaunty “Iowa Moon” off upcoming LP ‘L’Optimist’ is even sunnier. Charlotte’s Cosmic Collective are equally eclectic and upbeat, with tunes built on crab-walking bass, sparkling keys and Nikki Enslow’s bright, feathered vocals.

Petrov, Maiden Mother Crone, Subvertigo

Petra's 1919 Commonwealth Ave., Charlotte
$7
We love Petrov. The indie-rock powerhouse was our 2020 pick for top pop punk band, and best 2021 video winner for “Outlier." Latest single “Dior” eschews the four-piece’s careening post-punk guitars and muscular melodies, for a moody, hypnotic collaboration with rapper Killa. Trippy Atlanta shoegaze/progressive rockers Maiden Mother Crone conjoin the clangorous and the ethereal, while Charlotte’s Subvertigo craft dynamic alt-rock that turns from a whisper to a shout on a sharp shiny dime.

X, Squirrel Nut Zippers

Neighborhood Theatre 511 E 36th St, Charlotte, NC, United States
$45
LA punk juggernaut X outlasted the late 1970s punk explosion that spawned it. A hard-hitting fusion of punk, rockabilly and blues, supporting the soaring/quavering blood harmonies of then-married couple John Doe and Exene Cervenka, X was today’s alt-roots music decades before its time. Chapel Hill’s Squirrel Nut Zippers soared to popularity in the 1990s and craft rollicking tunes from the sounds of old weird America — Crescent City jazz, Harlem jump, and jug band stompers.
