In episode 40 of the Nooze Hounds podcast, Ryan and Justin talk to Mylon Patton, fifth generation resident of Cherry; and Aletha Burgess, who moved into the neighborhood four years ago, about the recent debate over the future of the historic Morgan School.
As Ryan reported in in his latest News feature, a new plan by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) to lease out Morgan School, which has sat empty in the heart of the neighborhood since 2017, to Arts+ has sparked debate within the community between legacy residents who want to claim ownership over the school and other folks who support the arrival of the local youth arts organization.
The issue returns to the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners for a vote on right to refusal on May 18 before heading to the CMS Board of Education, but as Burgess and Patton discuss in the episode, what’s happening at Morgan School is a microcosm of larger issues in a quickly changing neighborhood.
