Specialty coffee business Night Swim Coffee announced this week that it is ready to open its fifth location at The Joinery on North Brevard Street in north Charlotte’s Optimist Park neighborhood on April 15. This location will be the 13th coffee shop opened by the Black Rock Hospitality Group, who also own the Not Just Coffee and Undercurrent Coffee brands.

The two brands merged under the Black Rock umbrella in 2021, when the Night Swim Coffee brand was created.

First announced in May 2022, the latest Night Swim location was originally scheduled to open in September of that year but now appears ready to open its doors.

In a release on Monday, Night Swim co-founder Todd Huber said he was interested in partnering with The Joinery thanks to their dedication to sustainable living through smart technology and sustainable features. The complex is one block from the LYNX Blue Line and offers tenants an exclusive electric car share program.

“The Joinery’s focus on environmental resiliency and facilitating walkable neighborhoods is incredibly attractive to us and something that we are proud to be affiliated with,” Huber stated. “Our families have lived close to this location for over a decade, so we understand the potential for evolution and growth in the area.”

The cafe, developed by Cluck Design architecture firm and contractor Balfour Beatty, will feature an open layout, large glass windows and 56 seating options.

The team warmed up the minimalist atmosphere created by Joinery developers Space Craft by adding wood furnishings and emphasizing Night Swim’s traditional earthy tones, according to the release.

“Having a strong locally owned retail tenant is so important to the ‘forward-looking’ culture we want to build in Optimist Park,” said Harrison Tucker, CEO and co-founder of Space Craft. “Night Swim will be a great neighbor to our new tenants, and we’re hoping their presence serves as a destination for like-minded folks to gather on our site for conversation and community.”

The new location will go beyond Night Swim’s usual menu, offering the new Sesame Peanut Tofu Wrap with house-made peanut sauce, marinated tofu, purple cabbage slaw, jalapeno peppers, spicy mayo, and a tomato tortilla wrap; as well as the Ploughboy’s Bowl with Jarvis Yellow Dent Corn from Anson Mills, house-made tomato gravy, chèvre, and parsley. They will also offer a selection of bagels and house-made cream cheeses.

The Joinery location will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.
