On episode 89 of the Nooze Hounds podcast, I spoke to local political organizer Tanya Lewis about the upcoming 2024 elections. We spoke about a range of topics ranging from the rise of fascism in America and gerrymandering in North Carolina to voter apathy and continuing to fight in the face of an overwhelming power imbalance.

Since moving to the area in 2017, Lewis has served as Precinct 13 chair for the Mecklenburg County Democratic Party, chair of the Victory Fund for the North Carolina Democratic Party (NCDP), member of the NCDP State Executive Committee, chair of the Minority Affairs Committee for the 14th Congressional District, and most recently was elected to be a Democratic delegate to the 2024 Democratic National Convention.

On the podcast, Lewis described her naivete as a newly arrived Democrat in Huntersville getting involved in local politics through the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education, and how it gradually became clear that the goal of many conservative activists in the education space was to undermine public education as a whole.

This year, Lewis is focused on voter outreach, focusing specifically on Black voters who are registered to vote but aren’t interested in showing up come election time. She described a recent example with one such man in Uptown and how her conversation with him was like many others she’s had this year.

Dozens of federal, state and local races are on the ballot this November. You can check your voter registration data at the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections website.
