The team behind Paper Plane Market & Deli, a sandwich spot and bar located inside HUB 933 in the Belmont neighborhood, has announced a new concept called The Hangar, set to fully open inside of Devil’s Logic Brewing in June. Paper plane co-owners Amanda Cranford and Adriana Flores are reimagining the existing Paper Plane menu for the new kitchen, which is currently in a soft-opening phase.

The original bodega opened in March 2020, just before the first COVID shutdown. However, because of its status as a grocery store, they were able to stay open throughout the pandemic. The market also famously provided toilet paper to anyone who needed it during the shortage early in the shutdown, handing it out with sandwiches and other purchases.

Still, Cranford’s business plan originally hinged heavily on traffic from the nearby Advent Coworking offices, which shut down at the beginning of the pandemic and still haven’t seen a return to normal levels of attendance. That considered, it’s been anything but easy for the Paper Plane team.

“After a hard and disorienting first year of business, it is so refreshing to share some good news with our community,” said Cranford in a release on Wednesday. “We’ve seen many things this past year but through many of our customers at Plane we’ve seen the beauty of the human spirit. We want to continue to contribute to the good and give back to those who have given us so much.”

The Hangar will continue in the Paper Plane Market & Deli spirit of being a welcoming hang-out spot that doesn’t take itself too seriously, as can be seen in the names of two menu items we’ve gotten a glimpse at thus far: Deez Nuts and Trash Nachos.

“My intention since day one of opening Plane was to create delicious food and to provide a positive environment and a safe space for customers and employees,” said Cranford. “With The Hangar, we have an opportunity to not only grow the business but also create an opportunity for our team members to grow and to serve the community that Devil’s Logic has created.”

To construct the menu, Cranford and Flores took the existing sandwiches available at Paper Plane and transformed them into pub-friendly snacks. For example, the smoked salmon bagel at Plane was the inspiration for The Hangar’s smoked salmon dip served with bagel chips and everything-bagel seasoning.

Flores will serve as head chef at The Hangar.

“To say that I’m excited about The Hangar is an understatement,” she said. “Creating a community at Paper Plane was the highlight of my year. The people who come into our space have been so supportive and have become family. I want to create that feeling of community and sense of magic in a new space. I think we need more of that. And good food, good beer, and good times … who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?”

The Hangar is located in Devil’s Logic Brewing at 1426 E. 4th St. in the Cherry neighborhood. Scheduled hours of operation are Tuesday-Thursday, 4-10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, Noon-10 p.m., and Sunday, noon-8 p.m. Check them out on Instagram
