PHOTOS: Conor Oberst and Bright Eyes Shine at Fillmore

While there might have been a sense of trepidation around the Bright Eyes concert at Fillmore in Charlotte on Tuesday night — the band’s singer Conor Oberst left a recent show in Texas after performing just two songs and has reportedly been involved in other erratic behavior onstage this year — any fears were sidelined shortly into the show by Oberst’s stellar performance.

From the opening screams of “Dance and Sing,” Oberst appeared to be all-in on every song he sang. The indie-rock band, which is typically a four-piece, was bolstered by an eight-piece orchestra that added plenty of depth to an array of songs. And while the audience was generally subdued and enthralled by Oberst’s vocals, there were plenty of loud cheers before fan favorites.
Whether Oberst was at the piano, on acoustic, or wailing away on an electric guitar, his vocals were regularly in the spotlight, soaking his notes in plenty of emotion.
The night started with a 30-minute set from Hurray for the Riff Raff, which was the perfect accompaniment for the evening. Frontwoman Alynda Segarra offers her own blend of folk and rock featuring emotive vocals. Oberst dedicated “Haile Selassie” to Segarra, noting it was the band’s last night on tour together.
