PHOTOS: The Chicks Have No Reason to Play Nice at PNC

It’s been six years since The Chicks last rolled through Charlotte and not much has changed in that time, including the trio’s name. They’re still playing plenty of hits for thousands of fans, they’re still poking the political bear, and they’re still doing their best to encourage the empowerment of women.

The Chicks have always had women’s backs — who can forget “Goodbye Earl” and its theme of revenge — and Thursday night at PNC Music Pavilion was no different. During “Tights on My Boat,” a video depicting a boat carrying five Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade saw the boat cruising along before it sank.

The group led a “Happy Birthday” singalong for singer Natalie Maines’ 18-year-old son as she filmed the crowd. However, the crowd needed no solicitation as they had already been singing along to every song The Chicks performed. Though conservatives tried to cancel The Chicks years ago for comments against George W. Bush, this night was clear that they still have plenty of supporters.
Back in 2016, The Chicks played three Patty Griffin cover songs. This time around, Patty Griffin was the opener (though they still squeezed in another Griffin cover, “Don’t Let Me Die in Florida,” into their set.) Maines’ vocal issues that caused the band to stop an Indianapolis show short and cancel a couple others in June were a thing of the past, as all three Chicks were on point throughout the night.
