From the bow of a cutout cruise ship to the seat of a mermaid throne, rapper/songstress Qveen Herby took a journey on Wednesday night.
The cruise theme was in full effect for her Isle of Qveen Tour, as Qveen Herby’s performance for a sold-out crowd at The Fillmore Charlotte offered a bit of storytelling.
The last time Amy Renee Heidemann Noonan was in town was 2013 as half of the pop duo Karmin. Since then, Noonan has rebranded herself as Qveen Herby, with Nick Noonan — her husband and former Karmin bandmate — going behind the scenes to produce the music.
Theatrics and lyrical fun are front and center for Qveen Herby. She’s constantly dancing and posing around the stage with music that draws from hip-hop, R&B and pop.
With one full-length album and 17 EPs under her belt, Qveen Herby had plenty to choose from for her 28-song set. Having released music as Qveen Herby since 2017, her first Charlotte performance didn’t disappoint.
The night opened with a 45-minute set from Thot Squad, which perhaps surprisingly comprises just one person. The rapper did just what a good opener should — entertained the hell out of the crowd and got them truly warmed up. Her at-times raunchy raps had those in attendance laughing, dancing and singing along when prompted in call-and-response fashion.
Thot Squad even found time to run off the stage and out into the crowd — nearly plowing into an attendee in the process. She apologized when she returned to the stage, then later came back out to perform “The Fool” with Qveen Herby.
The Isle of Qveen Tour will continue down then up the East Coast for the next couple weeks before wrapping with a show at the Brooklyn Paramount in New York City.
