Details Emerge in Deadly Police Shootout
CMPD this week identified a man who was killed in a shootout with police in northeast Charlotte on Friday, March 7.
According to a CMPD report, officers showed up at the home of 28-year-old Reggie Knight, located on Headquarters Farm Road in the Withrow Downs neighborhood near the Concord border, at around 4:30 p.m. that afternoon to serve several warrants. Upon their arrival, Knight allegedly tried to escape police before opening fire on them.
Officers fired back, killing Knight at the scene. Two officers were injured during the exchange, though it’s unclear from CMPD reports whether they were shot or hurt in some other way. Both of the injured officers were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings told reporters on the scene that officers knew Knight to be a “violent suspect” when they went to serve the warrants, though there is no mention of the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team being involved in the incident in any of CMPD’s reports.
Knight had 10 active warrants against him at the time of the police shootout: misdemeanor domestic violence, two counts of assault on a female, assault with a deadly weapon, assault by strangulation, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a firearm by felon, carrying a concealed gun, resisting a public officer, possession of drug paraphernalia and communicating threats.
He also had a past criminal record comprising minor charges in Mecklenburg and Iredell counties.
It’s unclear how many police officers fired their weapons during the shootout, though we do know that all officers who were involved have been placed on paid administrative leave while the NC State Bureau of Investigations and CMPD’s Internal Affair Bureau carry out parallel investigations, per department policy.
Health Officials Warn Residents About Measles Outbreaks
Mecklenburg County Public Health (MCPH) is encouraging parents to make sure their children are up to date on their measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine as national cases of measles rise.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 222 cases of measles had been reported from 12 states in 2025 as of March 7, including outbreaks in Texas and New Mexico. There has been one death associated with each of those outbreaks. No cases have yet been reported in Mecklenburg County this year.

The one confirmed case recorded in Mecklenburg last year was the first case of measles in North Carolina since 2018.
“It is frustrating to see a disease that was once eliminated in the US start to circulate again in communities across the country,” stated MCPH Director Dr. Raynard Washington in a release on Tuesday. “Measles is a highly contagious and serious illness and our best tool to protect against [it] is vaccination. I encourage parents to make sure their children are up to date on their vaccines to protect their health and prevent outbreaks in our community.”
Measles is a viral illness that can have serious health complications and can easily spread, with symptoms including a fever, runny nose, cough, rash and red eyes. Around 90% of unvaccinated individuals who are exposed to measles will become infected, according to MCPH, and about one in five people in the United States who get measles will be hospitalized.
Steph Curry to Return to Davidson Basketball Program for New Gig
Steph Curry is returning to the Charlotte area, but not to finish out his career with the Hornets as many local fans would like to see.
ESPN reported Monday that Curry has accepted a role as an assistant general manager for the basketball programs at his alma mater Davidson College. He will reportedly “provide guidance” to the men’s and women’s basketball teams, becoming the first player in any US major professional sport to take an administrative job with an NCAA team while still actively playing in the pros.
Having grown up in Charlotte as the son of Hornets legend Dell Curry, Steph first gained attention playing for Charlotte Christian before going on to take the Davidson Wildcats on a couple of Cinderella runs, including a memorable Elite Eight appearance in 2008. He has since become one of the best shooters to ever play in the NBA, racking up four NBA championships, two MVP awards, an NBA Finals MVP, 11 All-Star appearances and two NBA All-Star Game MVP awards.
Juvenile Charged in February West End Murder
CMPD on Monday announced that a juvenile suspect has been charged in the murder of a woman found shot in a wrecked vehicle in February.
In the above map tracking last year’s homicide total, black markers signify deaths by gun violence, green markers signify killings that may be deemed justified, red markers signify stabbings, yellow markers signify murder by vehicle, purple markers signify deaths by trauma or unknown cause, and blue markers signify police killings.
Shortly after 1:25 p.m. on Feb. 8, first responders were called to the scene of a car wreck on Vinton Street in the Historic West End, where they located 20-year-old Emily Lizama Alvarez inside the vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound. Medic transported Alvarez to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, where she died on Feb. 12.
On Monday, CMPD announced that it had obtained a warrant for first-degree murder against a juvenile suspect who was already in custody at Stonewall Jackson Youth Development Center for an unrelated charge.
Edwards Faces Frustrated Crowd of Constituents
Nearly 2,000 people showed up to a town hall held by Republican US Rep. Chuck Edwards in Asheville on Thursday night, calling on him to push back against the recent actions of President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s DOGE team.
“I met folks from all across the district and political spectrum who are worried about our country and who want to be heard,” said NC Rep. Lindsey Prather of Buncombe County in a tweet from the event.
At least one man was kicked out after confronting Edwards from the audience, yelling at the congressman as police escorted him out: “I’m a veteran, and you don’t give a fuck about me … You need to stand up for us. You need to do what we need you to fucking do.”
Another video shows a man railing against Edwards for a minute and a half, asking if he approves of Trump’s plan to annex Canada and Greenland or Trump’s treatment of national leaders that were once our allies.
