Modern Moxie Joins Sarah Shook & the Disarmers for Farewell Show
River Shook's 10-year project rocks out before bowing out
Last month, River Shook announced that their band Sarah Shook & The Disarmers’ upcoming 2025 tour will be its last. After dealing with multiple lineup changes over the last three years, plus Shook’s own journey with sobriety and a transition that saw them drop the name that remains up on Spotify and venue marquees, Shook decided it was time to put The Disarmers to bed and start on a new path.
Given the band’s performance at the tour’s kickoff at the Neighborhood Theatre on Tuesday night, fans can only hope and imagine that Shook will continue down a similar country-punk pathway to what brought the Chatham County band to popularity over the last decade.
For 10 years, Shook has made a name for themself with a rough-around-the-edges brand of music that carries honest emotions through lyrics. Perhaps the next iteration will cover some of these Disarmers songs, or perhaps they’re left in the files of “I’m glad I saw them back then…”
The night opened with a set by Charlotte indie-rock outfit Modern Moxie, performing this show as a trio without their drummer on hand. A fixture on the local music scene and perennial Best in the Nest honorees in this publication, the group offered a tight performance in a mildly stripped-down style.
Their musical abilities and lyrical content shine a light on why this band has had a consistent (and still growing) following around town and beyond.
One of the set’s highlights was “Big Wave,” a song written during the COVID-19 pandemic that brings emotions to the front and includes a “Fuck you Trump” refrain. As singer Madison Lucas told the crowd, “I was hoping we wouldn’t still be performing this song live, but here we are.”
While it may be a while before you hear from River Shook again, you should certainly keep an eye and an ear out for Modern Moxie any time they’re performing on a stage near you.
