Imagine being one of the biggest pop-country singers in the world. You go through a divorce. Your voice gets wrecked by Lyme disease and COVID, the latter of which also cancels a planned Vegas residency. There are various other hardships and hurdles along the way, as well.

While your voice isn’t quite what it used to be, you love performing and you love your fans, so you want to give everything you’ve got. So you hit the road and aim to put on a show that makes your fans happy.  And yet, in this age of social media derision, critics continue to tear you down for vocal weakness and allegedly lip-synching on tour.

Here we have Shania Twain’s story in a nutshell.

For fans in Charlotte on Wednesday night, one thing was clear: Shania Twain is still the one fans want. After kicking off her concert by singing out in the middle of the PNC Music Pavilion concourse, Twain took to the stage to dance and sing her heart out. Were there backing tracks or lip-synching? Possibly. Did that stop Twain from putting on an entertaining show that spanned decades of hits? Not at all.

The crowd at the sold-out Charlotte amphitheater soaked in every note. Even when Twain offered a slightly shaky version of “You’re Still the One,” which she dedicated to a couple in the crowd, it sounded far better than videos that have been circulating around the internet this year.

Hey, a lot of people don’t sound as good at 57 years old as they did when they were in their 20s and 30s. One thing is for sure, however: Shania Twain delivered a solid performance from start to finish.

The opening act, Priscilla Block, also did her best to soak in all of the energy of the night. The 27-year-old Raleigh native recently released the hit single “You, Me & Whiskey” with Justine Moore and was thrilled to be performing on such a grand stage in her home state.

(Side note: Shania Twain should win the award for most exclamation points used in song titles, as becomes clear in the setlist below.)
