It’s not easy to put a finger on the style of singer-songwriter Sierra Ferrell, but her sound is hypnotic just the same. Blending elements of folk, bluegrass, gypsy jazz and more, Ferrell’s vocals float effortlessly above the sonic backdrop created by acoustic instrumentation.
This was all on display for a sold-out Fillmore Charlotte on Sunday, May 12. Ferrell doesn’t create music that you sing along to as much as you stop, stare and listen. It’s enthralling. Time seems to move slowly, while the performance also feels like it’s over in the blink of an eye.

Before I knew it, Ferrell had performed more than a dozen songs and had disappeared for a costume change – leaving a puffy blue butterfly-covered dress for a more form-fitting sequined covered skirt. Not that her music’s style changed as her vocals continued down their sweet and soothing pathway.
Ferrell made sure to note that her mother had made the trek from West Virginia to attend the show (after all, it was Mother’s Day). Opener Jake Kohn—a 17-year-old with an older soul—also mentioned that his mom was in attendance, and selling his merch.

Kohn is one to keep an eye on. His weathered vocals instantly captivated the crowd and drew cheers on a regular basis. Chances are it won’t be long before he’s headlining venues like this on his own.
