Smashing Pumpkins Lead Night of ’90s Nostalgia

Plenty of souls appeased their teenage selves with a taste of yesteryear at PNC Music Pavilion on Tuesday night, as Smashing Pumpkins crashed through a set filled with alt-rock hits, including “Today,” “Cherub Rock” and “Bullet with Butterfly Wings.” While Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds took a couple songs to get the crowd warmed up, those in attendance went wild for a few Oasis cover songs and a Beatles closer. Late ’90s rockers AFI, led by charismatic frontman Davey Havok, got the night started on the right foot. Smashing Pumpkins has gained a bit of a resurgence in recent years with a trio of original members — singer/guitarist Billy Corgan, guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain.
