PHOTOS: Tedeschi Trucks Band Rolls Through Charlotte

It’s been a few years since the Tedeschi Trucks Band’s Wheels of Soul tour has been through Charlotte. Back in 2019, the band teamed up with Shovels & Rope. This time around, again at PNC Music Pavilion on Friday night, it was Los Lobos, preceded by a brief opening set from TTB’s own Gabe Dixon.

Los Lobos showcased a bit of their foundation — their Tex-Mex rock from California that’s carried them for nearly 50 years. There’s no “La Bamba” on this tour, as the band instead showcases more of its own music, save for the final tune, a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Bertha” that appeared on the 1991 album Deadicated.

It all set up for a soulful set from Tedeschi Trucks Band. The band is touring in support of its four-album/four-film series, I Am the Moon. The project bolstered the band’s setlist, which featured plenty of Susan Tedeschi’s passionate and soulful vocals, as well as Derek Trucks’ effortless guitar play. The third album in the series is due out this week.
The 12-member band consistently proves that you don’t need a catchy hook to make good music. The musicianship and songwriting craft that was on display is enough to lure the audience in and leave them satisfied without the need for 15 sing-alongs.
