A lot of bands save their best songs for last — usually the encore. Rarely do bands come out of the gate with a few of their biggest hits. The Head and the Heart is not like most bands.

At Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre on Tuesday, the indie-folk outfit took to the stage and performed back-to-back hits, “All We Ever Knew” and “Missed Connection.” It set the tone early, amping up the crowd’s energy — especially as guitarist Matt Gervais jumped into the crowd to sing just two songs into the set.

Solid harmonies, moments of bounce and plenty of singalongs dotted the band’s 21-song set, including the three-song encore. A majority of the setlist came from the band’s latest album, Aperture, which was released in May.

The album marked a return to the basics for the band, with the six members taking on production, writing and arrangement duties as opposed to previous projects in which they hired folks on for such roles, something that had made the band feel isolated from one another, pianist Kenny Hensley told Beatroute in May.

The night got started with brief sets from acoustic duo Marfa and Canadian folk band Wild Rivers.

The Aperture Tour continues on through the summer, with a much-anticipated Central Park show scheduled for July 30.
