5 Takeaways From the Wiz Khalifa, Logic Concert

Wiz Khalifa and Logic rolled into PNC Music Pavilion on Aug. 11 as part of the duo’s co-headlining Vinyl Verse Tour. While the sparse crowd was hype for the duration, I left the show with a handful of takeaways.

1. Stop cutting the songs short.
Too often, rappers and hip-hop artists will perform only snippets of their songs. Maybe it’s an effort to get 30 songs on a setlist instead of 20 full ones, but I’d take the full version over a teaser any day.

2. I want one of those bowls.
While Wiz Khalifa didn’t hesitate to smoke on stage, it was the bowls he offered off stage that peaked my curiosity. Apparently, he’s started a side business in the food industry and offers “Packed Bowls.” I didn’t notice it until my way out, but it’s an enticing dish that only the munchies could have inspired — mac and cheese, tater tots, chicken bites, tangy sauce and hot Cheetos dust.

3. Hip-hop shows make great showcases.
In addition to Wiz Khalifa and Logic, attendees got their money’s worth with a handful of opening acts. Short sets by C.Dot Castro, Fedd The God, DJ Drama and Chevy Woods led up to a longer set by 24kGoldn. You’ve gotta give credit to artists who give other performers an opportunity to shine, even if it’s just a few songs.

4. Wiz Khalifa is the second happiest rapper on stage.
Not long ago, I crowned Killer Mike as being the happiest rapper on stage. You can add Wiz Khalifa to the short list. He was all smiles from the moment he hit the stage, blunt in hand. From shooting smoke guns to throwing inflatable joints into the crowd, Khalifa set a “high” standard for partying.

5. Long live Logic’s mantra
Logic noted that it’s been three years since he’d been on stage for a tour — “Fuck COVID!” he reminded the crowd. However, he also reminded the crowd to take care of each other and repeated his mantra of peace, love and positivity. In times when it’s so easy to be full of dread due to pandemics, inflation and general ills, a bit of optimism was a welcome respite.
